Parks and Recreation Rangers led the Moth Night 2021 event at Clark Park. According to Park Ranger Supervisor Jennifer Smith, more than 20 people participated. Smith says that number was the most ever and families enjoyed it. “This event is always like a treasure hunt. We watch and hear the excitement spreading from one person to the next as the insects slowly start to appear and then become almost too numerous to keep up with.”
The event began with a lecture inside the Nature Center and then everyone went outside for a capturing session. Rangers used special wavelengths of light to draw the insects in, plus a lava lamp to welcome the moths in style and fun! One couple found a pink prominent moth which is uncommon in the area. Also, an impressive specimen of a pine sawyer beetle was found.
A public book at Clark Park Nature Center contains records of moths found in the nearby woods.
