Fayetteville City Work Session Recap – June 3, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville City Council met June 3 at 2 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers for the monthly work session to discuss matters relevant to the city with regards to their strategic plan.   

The meeting was called to order at 2 p.m. by Mayor Mitch Colvin, followed by the invocation delivered by Councilmember D.J. Haire, and the Pledge of Allegiance lead by the Mayor and Council.  

Councilmember Malik Davis moved to APPROVE THE AGENDA and go into closed session for attorney client privilege. This was seconded by Councilmember Brenda McNair. This PASSED unanimously (10-0). 

Council came back to open session at 2:58 p.m. 

There were six other items of business discussed during the work session. 

The Parks and Recreation Director presented Item 5.01, the response to an RFP for the management of Festival Park directed by the City Council. Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jenson made a motion to bring the responding company to present to Council at a future date. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Deno Hondros. The City of Fayetteville’s Real Estate Manager presented item 5.02, a resolution authorizing a lease for the Cross Creek District Office of the Police Department to the Council. This item was for informational purposes only and did not need to be voted on. It will be moved to a future Regular City Council Meeting for a vote. You can read more about this presentation here  

The Economic & Community Development Director presented item 5.03, the Empowering Community Safety Micro-Grant Program Close Out Report to the Council. Councilmember Mario Benavente made a motion to dedicate $100,000 of ARPA money towards supporting the program. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Haire. Council had consensus to move forward with this item. You can read more about this presentation here

A Fayetteville City Traffic Engineer presented item 5.04 about Downtown Parking in Fayetteville to City Council. Councilmember Hondros made a motion to end paid parking at 5 p.m. Council had consensus to move forward with this item. The vote was 8-2, with Councilmembers Courtney Banks-McLaughlin and Derek Thompson voting in opposition. You can read more about this presentation here.    

Construction Management presented item 5.05, the Parks and Recreation Projects Report Card to Council. This item was for informational purposes only and did not need to be voted on. You can read more about this presentation here

Assistant City Manager Jeffrey Yates presented item 5.06, the Recommended FY 2024-25 Operating and Capital Budget to the City Council. This item was for discussion and informational purposes only. Mayor Colvin announced that he is calling a Special Meeting for June 12 at Noon, in the City Hall Council Chambers. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Recommended FY 24-25 Operating and Capital Budget.
