When you hit a five-year milestone with the City, you have a reason to celebrate! Traditionally, an Employee Service Awards ceremony is held twice per year. Employees who reach a five-year milestone can receive a certificate and a service pin.

For those who maintain City streets, days can be long. Rain and ice make the job rough but the work can save lives. Street Maintenance Supervisor Terrance Roberson was one employee recognized at City Hall on August 4. Roberson reflected on his 35 years with the City:

Q. What was your first role with the City?:

A. “I was hired in 1987, my job title was Construction Worker with the Engineering Department, Street Maintenance Division. I was assigned to the crack, seal and asphalt crew.”

Q. Describe some of the most challenging parts of your job.

A. “One example is during Hurricane Matthew I was the shift supervisor, sending crews to remove downed trees and we were also responsible for blocking flooded streets. At the same time, our home base for operations was flooded. We had to move our equipment assets to higher ground and regroup.”

Q. What inspired you to build a career here and stay employed with the City?:

A. “I was inspired by relatives who worked for the City and they went on to retire from the City.”

Q. Why do you enjoy your job?:

A. “We maintain streets and infrastructure throughout the City. Every day is a different and I have a great group of coworkers.”

Q. Any favorite memories or projects that you have worked on over the years?:

A. “Being a part of and witnessing the revitalization of downtown Fayetteville.”
