Vehicle Struck by Train
(Fayetteville, NC) – On Sunday, February 19, 2017, at approximately 2:04 am, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle struck by a train near the intersection of Franklin Street and Winslow Street.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle had become disabled on the railroad tracks and was occupied by four people, who were attempting to free the vehicle from the railroad tracks. As a train began to approach, two of the occupants were able to escape from the vehicle. Two other occupants of the vehicle were unable to escape from the vehicle and remained inside the vehicle as it was subsequently struck by a train. One of the occupants was pronounced deceased on scene. The second occupant was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in critical condition.
The names of all parties involved are currently being withheld until their immediate families can be notified.
The railroad crossings along Winslow Street, in downtown Fayetteville, are currently blocked by the stopped train. Motorists should utilize Rowan Street until the crossings can be cleared and reopened.
The FPD will work jointly with representatives from CSX during the crash investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
